English - Sri Pingali
Venkayya was an example of a person who sought to develop his knowledge at
every opportunity. What lesson can you learn from his life?
Introduction:
Time immortal this world have socially and culturally changed a lot, and these
changes, occurred, and evolved only as a result of the periodic arrival of few
noble but simple selfless human beings, in every region of this earth, who must
be remembered, and such recollection can only refine the blood of our younger
generation to find the path, from where we had come across. One such
personality that I am going to narrate in this article is Mr Pingali venkayya
from Andhra Pradesh. We must envisage every qualities of Mr pingali Venkayya as
a source of inspiration for our progress and in the development of India in the
new millennium as to become the super power of the world as dreamed by our
another great living legend Dr A P J Abdul kalam.
It was highlighted by our
Great Poet 'Thiruvalluvar' that
"Fame is virtue's
child, they say; if, then,
You childless live, you live the scorn of
men."
It must be noted that Our
Pingali venkayya too was the fitting personality to the above verse that he
left a unfading fame in the History of india during the colonial period that
was a high flashing point in the Indian history that many of our founding
members of the freedom struggle had left many guiding impressions for the
future generations to live with dignity, valour and discipline.
An
outstanding Student: After
high school at Machlipatnam, he went to Colombo to complete his Senior
Cambridge. On returning to India, he worked as a railway guard, then as a
government employee at Bellary. He was an accomplished person on many fronts.
He was immensely knowledgeable in geology and obtained a doctorate in it. He
was an authority on diamond mining in Andhra Pradesh and was popularly known as
'Diamond Venkayya'.
Multi-lingual
personality: He had learnt history, Japanese and Urdu at
the Anglo-Vedic College at lahore.
Research
Mind: Pingali Venkayya
was an authority in geology, agriculture and also an educationist who set up an
educational institution in Machilipatnam. He was so much interested and specialised
in agriculture and spent most of his fortune in experimenting with ginger, cotton
plantations in Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh. From 1906–11, he spent his
time in Munagala researching agriculture crops. For his pioneering study on
Cambodian cotton, he came to be called Patti Venkaiyya. He was also conferred
on honorary membership of theRoyal Agricultural Society of Britain.
Patriotic
role: In the year 1895, at age 19 he
enlisted himself in the Boer War. The move turned out to play a great role in
chalking the course of his life for it was during his stay at South Africa that
he met first met Mahatma Gandhi. Venkaiah
returned to India and worked first as a railway guard at Bangalore and Madras,
and then as the plague officer at Bellary. But his zeal to be part of freedom
movement was strong and he soon quit his government job, choosing instead to
further his intellectual pursuits.
He moved to Lahore and
learnt history, Japanese and Urdu at the Anglo-Vedic College. It was during
this time that he began his foray into active politics. He became a member of
the Congress and met with revolutionaries who were involved in the Freedom movement.
He often indulged in debates with on ways to end the British rule. It was during
that time that he attended the 1906 Congress session. Witnessing Dada Bhai Naoroji
hoist the Union Jack, instilled him the desire and need for India to have her
own National flag.
It is unthinkable that the
man who designed the National flag could die in obscurity, unsung by the people
of his nation. But this is true for Pingali Venkiah. Not much is known about
him when he died on the 4th of July 1963, Pingali Venkiah was a poor man whose
family was already scattered. He died unable to fulfil his last desire of
seeing the Indian flag, flutter atop the ramparts of the Red Fort, because his
family did not have the financial means to take him to Delhi.
We younger generation must
recall all these sacrifices of our senior leaders and oath to bring their
dreams and aspirations to reality and make India as a peaceful prosperous
country on earth that we Indians can ever proud of.
Humble
beginning and simple family History (August 2, 1876 - July 4, 1963) : Mr Pingali did not have born with silver spoon
on his mouth but as the elder of 6 brothers and 2 sisters to his parents Mr Hanumantha Raidu and Venkat
Ratnamma in Yarlagadda, Krishna district, near Machlipatnamin present day
Andhra Pradesh in 1876. He married Rukminamma, daughter of Turlapati Venkatachalam
and Mangamma. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. The eldest son Pingali
Parasuramaiah worked for Indian Express as a correspondent. Pingali only
daughter Seethamahalakshmi, widow of Ghantasala Vugra Narasimham is the only
direct sibling living now. Pingali’s other son late Chalapathi Rao worked in
the Indian army.
Theme
of Pingali’s life:
He was
initiative, Delegator, Consistent, Well Educated, Open-Minded, Enthusiastic, Flexible/Adaptable
Leader. A leader should work to be the motivator and an
initiator. He/she must be a key element in the planning and implementing of new
ideas, programs, policies, events, etc. If anyone investigate and examine the
life of Mr Pingali, he will appreciate the hard work of his eminent agricultural
research program that was aimed to alleviate the poverty of the country. He
remained as a patriotic person not willing for compromise.
Conclusion: There is always a semblance among the great
livings of the earth such as Jesus, Gandhiji, Lincon etc., same happened to our
beloved Pingali also in his later days. Free India did not recognise his hard
work that was ever due. It is very sad
to note that He, however, died in poverty in 1963 and was largely forgotten by
the society and by his own party, the Congress. A postage stamp was issued to
commemorate him in 2009 and in 2011.
We younger generation
therefore must keep the sacrifices of our great leaders into our hear and remember
them, for all our present day joys are because of their selfless deeds! We are
living in the free India and we must take oath to fulfil their dreams of making
India as a peaceful, prosperous country in the earth, in the ever sprit and blessings
of our past leaders such as Mr Pingali Venkayya.
